Abies sachalinensis is commonly known as Sachalin fir or Todo
fir.
It can be found in eastern Asia and northern Japan, in
sub-alpine forests from near the sea level to 1600 meters.
The wood is light, soft, and not very durable. It is mostly used
for pulp, construction, boxes, ship building, and water works.

The wood is soft creamy white in color and light in weight. Lumber
with too low density and too wide annual ring width is frequently
seen, and these are not suitable for construction timber. Meanwhile,
trees with extremely high moisture content in heartwood are also
seen, a condition of which causes the stem to crack in winter
and the wood to deteriorate (crack, collapse, or stain) when
it is dried.
